Wooden nesting dolls consist of a figure which can be pulled apart to reveal another figure of the same sort inside. It has in turn another figure inside, and so on. The number of nested figures is usually six or more.

The first Russian nesting dolls (Matryoshka) were made in 1890 in the workshop "Children's Education" situated in Abramtsevo Estate New Moscow. The owner of Abramtsevo was Sava Mamontov who was an industrialist and a patron of the arts.
Wooden nesting dolls are made from 1 solid part which is cut in half, this then becomes the "mother" for all the other dolls which fit inside one another, after the basic shape has been made the parts are painted and varnished to give them a glossy appearance. Many of the Russian wooden nesting dolls were made of 10 dolls so children would be able to learn to count.

The biggest nesting doll ever made contained 72 pieces; it was roughly 1 meter high. This unique doll was made in 1970 and was dedicated to birthday of Soviet communist leader Lenin. It cost 3000 rubles which wasn't far off the price of a popular Russian car costing 5,000 rubles. The doll was sent to an exhibition in Japan.
